On or about December 27, 2012, through January 22, 2013, while employed as a Case Manager RN in a hospital in Wharton, the RN failed to supervise wound care performed by licensed vocational nurses for a patient, and failed to ensure that the wound care orders were followed and proper supplies used. Single-use Purlion Gel was reused multiple times on the patient’s wounds, which compromised the sterility of the gel. Subsequently, the patient developed a Staphylococcus aureus wound infection. In response to the incident, the RN states that wound care orders are readily available to all visiting staff to view/review via their electronic devices. She asserts that wound care was performed by staff as ordered, and she herself gathered supplies for the field staff as needed. The RN adds that since the LVN who cared for the patient was in the office daily, they readily coordinated care on the patients on their shared caseload.
