At the time of the initial incident, Respondent was employed as a Registered Nurse at a hospital in Harlingen, Texas, and had been in that position for four (4) years and nine (9) months.
On or about January 26, 2018, through January 27, 2018, the RN failed to notify the physician that that patient had a change in neurological status including disorientation to person, place, and situation. The RN’s conduct deprived the physician of the opportunity to institute timely medical interventions to stabilize the patient.
On or about January 26, 2018, through January 27, 2018, the RN twice administered oral medications by syringe with water when the patient was refusing to swallow. Additionally, she failed to document if she crushed the patient’s medications when she administered them by syringe with liquid. The RN’s conduct created an inaccurate and/or incomplete medical record and exposed the patient unnecessarily to risk of complications including aspiration.
On or about February 24, 2018, through February 25, 2018, on three (3) separate occasions, the RN administered prescription pain medications to a patient inconsistent with the physician’s orders and without seeking clarification or approval from the physician. The RN’s conduct could have harmed the patient from ineffective pain management, adverse reactions, and also deprived the physician of the opportunity to institute timely medical interventions.
As a response to the incidents, the RN states she practiced within the standards of care and properly administered all medications.
However, due to the lack of a nurse attorney to help her properly defend her side, the RN was put into discipline by the Texas Board of Nursing.
