In Texas, the government has created a special agency that has the jurisdiction to handle controversies and cases involving the nursing profession. This tribunal is called the Texas Board of Nursing (BON). At the time of the incident, an RN was employed as a Registered Nurse at a hospital facility in The Woodlands, Texas, and had been in that position for four (4) months.
On or about November 28, 2020, while working as a Registered Nurse, and providing care for the patient, the said RN failed to provide physician-ordered bed rest, when she inappropriately assisted the patient out of bed and to the bedside commode, and the RN failed to timely notify her supervisors and/or the physician that the patient had gotten out of bed. The patient was less than an hour post stent placements in the Heart Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab). Further, when the RN later noticed the patient had started bleeding, she again inappropriately assisted the patient to the bedside commode. Subsequently, the patient developed a large retroperitoneal hematoma, experienced hypotension for several hours, and required a blood transfusion of two units of Packed Red Blood Cells. The RN’s conduct likely contributed to the development of a hematoma in a postoperative Cath Lab patient.
In the aftermath of the occurrence, the RN reports, that she inappropriately put a patient’s life in harm’s way when she aided with voiding needs when the patient had just come back from the cath lab, and ended up with a retroperitoneal hematoma and needed two units of PRBCs.
Because of this, the Texas Board of Nursing subjected the LVN to disciplinary action. For the further scope of the disciplinary action, the LVN’s nurse license may be put at risk and may be facing suspension or revocation.
