The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) is the government agency that has jurisdiction to hear and decide administrative cases involving RNs in Texas. It is also the agency that is responsible for overseeing the practice of professional nursing all over the state of Texas. Any RN who is guilty of violating state laws and issuances from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) may be subjected to penalties or fines. As a matter of fact, the RN license can even be suspended or revoked. if not properly defended by Houston Nurse Lawyer

A perfect example of this happened on October 20, 2015. While employed as an RN in a Medical Center in Edinburg, the RN exceeded her scope of practice as an RN by ordering three medications for a pediatric patient, without receiving orders from the physician.

Subsequently, the RN administered Benedryl, Motrin, and prednisolone to the patient, without physician orders, including three times the correct dose of prednisolone. Her conduct was likely to injure the patient from adverse effects due to incorrect doses and administration of medication without the benefit of a physician’s expertise.

As a defense to the case, the RN states that in emergency care settings, there are many verbal orders received by nurses and in haste, there might be a lack of documentation or improper medication doses calculated. The RN also states that she failed to write a verbal order and carry out proper documentation, and it was an isolated incident.

However, the Texas Board of Nursing found her conduct violates the Texas Occupations Code. As a result, her RN license was disciplined and suspended.

This is just one of the many causes why every RN in Texas is expected to act with prudence in practicing the profession. Gross negligence or disobedience on the part of a licensed RN is never excused.

In another incident, an RN license was suspended, and was placed on probation due to non-compliance with an Agreed Order issued to her by Texas. Noncompliance is the result of an RN’s failure to abstain from the consumption of alcohol. She produced a urine specimen for a random drug screen that resulted positive for Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) and Ethyl Sulfate (EtS), which are metabolites of Alcohol (ethanol).

The Agreed Order states that the nurse shall abstain from the use of alcohol, tramadol, and all controlled substances, except as prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a legitimate purpose…”

To counter the allegation, RN states she sought treatment and completed inpatient treatment on May 5, 2017.

However, the Texas Board of Nursing finds that there exist serious risks to public health and safety as a result of impaired nursing care due to intemperate use of controlled substances or chemical dependency used by the RN.

As a result, the Texas Board of Nursing found the RN guilty of the complaint against her. Her RN license was suspended and she was placed under probation. She lost the case simply because she failed to find an effective, efficient, and the right Nurse  Lawyer.
